Restaurant: The Penrose
The Penrose is a great all-purpose type place, and has
quickly become my default bar/restaurant go-to.
I’ve come here with… a friend after we had a disappointing drink nearby,
a group of colleagues (the fun ones) after we decided our wine-pairing dinner
with the CEO didn’t get us quite buzzed enough, and on an occasion in which I
needed to be consoled and a friend got me lots of martinis.
The Penrose is run by the Bua Bar Group, a well-experienced
team that operates The Wren in the East Willage, Wilfie & Nell and The
Spaniard in the West Village, Sweet Afton over in Astoria. The Penrose very much keeps in line with the
vibe of their other establishments.
The drinks are expertly made, and I really have not been
disappointed yet by anythink I have imbibed here. The food is somewhat lacking – it’s best
eaten after enjoying a few drinks, which will obscure some of the
shortcomings. It’s not bad, it’s just
somewhat lacking, falling behind the high-expectations set by the
cocktails. It’s still a great all-purpose
bar.
